Dave Vanness' research focuses on the role that information and uncertainty play in health care decisions at both the "clinical" level (medical decision-making) and "population" level (health care policy; technology assessment and insurance coverage). He applies simulation and econometric modeling methods to a variety of problems, ranging from using genomic information to improve patient treatment choices for advanced colorectal cancer to assessing the value of screening and treatment for osteoporosis. He believes that by better understanding how information is created (through research and observation), communicated (through publication, advertising and doctor-patient communication) and processed (through models of decision making under uncertainty), we can ultimately make better decisions affecting individual and population health.
