CBHD Welcomes President’s Bioethics Council Focus on Human Dignity
Chicago, Illinois -
December 9, 2005 - The Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity
(CBHD) welcomes the President’s Council on Bioethics’ renewed focus
on human dignity, the central concept in bioethics.
“At the heart of many of the complex biotechnological developments
that the Council grapples with,” states CBHD President Dr. Andrew
Fergusson “is the question of what it means to be human.”
The President’s Council on Bioethics today considered the topic
Human Dignity as a Bioethical Concept, and held a discussion on a
Staff Working paper entitled “Bioethics and Human Dignity.” CBHD
holds that every human being intrinsically possesses dignity, the
quality of being worth esteem. “The most demanding responsibility of
the nation that continues to dominate global science and technology
is to demonstrate our commitment to the dignity of the individual,
and to harness our extraordinary powers for the human good,” states
Dr. Nigel Cameron, CBHD Senior Fellow.
“In disability and sickness, it is the sense of dignity, not dignity
itself, which is lost,” says Dr. Fergusson. “It is the duty of
bioethics and healthcare to restore this sense of dignity. We hope
the President’s Council concurs, and we look forward to fruit from
their discussions.” CBHD
