The Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity Laments the Passing of Harold O. J. Brown, PhD

July 11, 2007 – Chicago, Illinois – The Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity (CBHD) laments the passing of Harold O. J. Brown, PhD.  Joe Brown served originally as a founding Fellow of the Center, and more recently brought distinction to the Center as a Senior Fellow.  Brown was an accomplished educator and scholar serving as professor emeritus of biblical and systematic theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois.

With former United States Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, MD, Brown co-founded the Christian Action Council, an evangelical pro-life action group of which he served as the chairman. In addition, he also served as the director of the Center on Religion and Society at the Rockford Institute and taught in the International Seminar on Jurisprudence and Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.

CBHD Senior Scholar, John Kilner, PhD, notes of Brown, “He was a true pioneer in mobilizing efforts to protect life at all stages of development. As we grieve our separation from him now, we are so grateful for all the many lives that have been allowed to continue and thrive because of his efforts.”

Brown's scholarly range was vast, including the ability to speak well in the areas of systematic theology; right-to-life issues; ethics, especially medical and family values; journalism; public affairs; and political philosophy. Kilner comments, “While he did this through organizational structures and strategies, his special gift was his writing.  He helped huge numbers of people to understand for the first time the preciousness of human life.”

Brown served on the editorial staff of Human Life Review and Christianity Today, as contributing editor for Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture, and as editor of The Religion & Society Report. His most recent book was Sensate Culture (Word, 1996).

CBHD Director, C. Ben Mitchell, PhD, observes, “Joe was rightly known for his rigorous intellectual scholarship, persevering compassionate activism, and transforming mentoring relationships.  He will be greatly missed.”  CBHD
