A biblical view of life is centered in God. The Prologue to John’s gospel presents a self-existent God who as the Word created all things. It is this Word of whom it says, “in him was life.” Life is not inherent to the creature but is intrinsic to the creator. Life is fundamentally about relationship with that creator. It is essential that we take this understanding of life to the table when we discuss issues of Bioethics. We have for decades maintained the sanctity of life as made in the image of God. We err if we use that truth to teach that life should be centered in the one who bears the image rather than in the one whose image we bear. This paper will develop a theology of life based in God and demonstrate how this God centered view of life affirms the value of all human life but is incompatible with nonspecism and vitalism.
