While there are many leaders of the conservative protestant bioethics movement in the United States today, Dr. Gilbert Meilaender certainly deserves a prominent place among them. A Missouri-Synod Lutheran clergyman who earned his PhD in theological ethics from Princeton University, Meilaender taught for many years at Oberlin College before moving to his present teaching position at Valparaiso University. Besides writing and speaking extensively about bioethics from this traditional reformation (mostly Lutheran) perspective, Meilaender has also had a large public presence serving as both a Fellow at the Hastings Institute and as a member of the President’s Council on Bioethics. As a sharp thinker whose roots are buried deep in Biblical, Catholic (Nicene), and Reformational Protestant theology, evangelicals have much to learn from this renowned educator ethicist. This paper will examine Meilaender’s writings for insights for contemporary protestant bioethicists regarding the promise and peril in various types of ethical theories.
