Consumerism and medicalization have redefined our everyday understanding of health and wellbeing in contemporary medicine. As the concept of health has narrowed through rising emphases on diagnostics, medical therapeutics, and outcomes, have we lost meaningful aspects of health as it relates to human flourishing? Furthermore, has our pursuit of individual health been at the expense of our common humanity?
The Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity's 20th Annual Summer Conference, Health & Human Flourishing will explore the impact of contemporary notions of health within the context of advances in medicine, science, and technology for our individual and common humanity.
CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES:
IDENTIFY the prospects and challenges for promoting robust conceptions of health within the context of advances in medicine and biotechnology.
EXPLORE & DISCUSS the ethical implications of recent developments in medicine, science, and technology with respect to our individual and common humanity.
EVALUATE contemporary formulations of health in light of classic orientations toward care and comfort.
PROMOTE networking and interdisciplinary engagement on pressing bioethical issues.
