Robert E. Cranston, MD, MA, FAAN, is an Attending Physician, and Medical Director for Medical Subspecialties at Carle Clinic and Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. Prior to his current position, he served as chair of the Neurology Department at Carle for ten years. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He graduated cum laude from Greenville College, in Greenville, Illinois with a BA in Biology, completed an MD from The University of Illinois at Chicago, completed an MA in Bioethics, magna cum laude from Trinity International University, and received a Postgraduate Diploma in Palliative Medicine from the University of Wales College of Medicine. He completed a neurology residency at University of Arizona, an epilepsy fellowship at University of Minnesota, a clinical medical ethics fellowship at the University of Chicago, and is a diplomate and fellow of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Cranston is Director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic in Urbana, IL, and chairs the Ethics Committee, and the Inpatient Ethics Consultation Team at Carle Foundation Hospital. He was a 2002-2003 MacLean Center Ethics Fellow at University of Chicago, is on the Christian Medical and Dental Associations’ Ethics Committee, and is a past Fellow of The Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity. He lectures frequently on various neurology and medical ethics topics.
Dr. Cranston grew up in the Philippine Islands where his parents were missionaries. He is an emeritus trustee on the Board of Trustees of Greenville College. He and his wife Tammy are avid bicyclists and live in Bloomington, Illinois.
