Western culture believes it has progressed beyond the folklore which believes disability to be the result of sin or curse. Nevertheless, those with disabilities continue to be regarded as lacking wholeness. Whereas the apostles asked Jesus “Who sinned, that this man was born blind,” today’s cultural apostle might shorten the question to simply “Who sinned, that this man was born?” In a society obsessed with wellness, consumerism, and radical autonomy, the person and message of Jesus Christ come as a disruption.
Drawing on his ministry experience with the Deaf, the blind, and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Pastor Targe will demonstrate the blessed wholeness of being made in God’s image, how that is reflected in physical and neuro-diversity, and how the church can reflect Christ’s inclusive discipleship and kingdom.
