In March 2006 I had an opportunity to teach a course on bioethics at the Seminario Semisudamerica (hereafter “Semisud”). This was an important learning experience for me as well as for my students. I found that ministerial students who came from Ecuador, Argentina, Peru, and Bolivia were keenly interested in the themes of bioethics. I was quite pleased to have as my translator a close friend and colleague Dr. Miguel Endara. This workshop presentation shall focus on (1) A brief update on the abortion debate in Ecuador and Latin America; (2) the possibilities and difficulties of Evangelical and Roman Catholic co-operation on life issues; (3) the problem of poverty and the temptations of first-world exploitation of the poor via “human experimentation” and “human guinea pigs” in the third-world context; and (4) Exploration of existing opportunities for U.S. scholars to teach bioethics in Ecuador and Latin America.
