We will have heard a little about the scope of neuroethics, which is arguably a new branch of bioethics, but our first plenary is intended to remind us that we must always be concerned too with human dignity. The title of our session comes from Jesus’ answer in Mark 12 to the question: “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” He replies: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and gives as the second: “Love your neighbor as yourself”. Perhaps fulfillment of these illustrates the height of human dignity. But where is human dignity when not “all your mind” appears to be there? To explore these issues, we present a real life case history, of a local man with severe traumatic brain injury six years ago. His younger brother, Raul Alvarez, will tell his story.
