This workshop will utilize a case study format to address two perinatal bioethical issues. The care of mothers and babies has changed dramatically over the course of the last 45 years. 1.) The advent of life-saving technology has preserved many lives while new prenatal genetic screening techniques lead to the loss of life for many others. 2.) There has been an important recent focus on significant outcome disparities related to race and the best solutions. Choices abound and too often moral schizophrenia is the result. Focusing on these two issues involves a review of reliable medical evidence followed by analysis of starkly different bioethical choices. O. Carter Snead’s description of the anthropologies of “expressive individualism” and “dependent embodiment” is very helpful in addressing these issues. The workshop session will provide time for discussion.
