Seeking the good, right, just, and virtuous is no easy task in today’s complex bioethics world. And making an impact on that world is challenging. Despite significant attempts in the bioethics arenas over the past several decades, the impact upon the larger pluralistic, mainstream society has been minimal. This session seeks to examine why that is so and how we might navigate our way in the days ahead. We will explore the primary factors that make moral imagination in bioethics so difficult in our contemporary context, showing that our major assumptions about life, death, human nature, and God are frequently at odds with the prevailing cultural ethos. This is primarily why our collective impact has been negligible. We will then examine some of the options before us in calling for a moral imagination that is wise and realistic, while being deeply rooted in our core convictions and beliefs.
