Almost daily one can find reports in the media touting new and exciting advances in biotechnology.  Paralleling these reports the reasons for how and when to apply these advances are both multiplying and evolving as the technological possibilities explode on the public scene.  Considering the scientific, ethical, and policy complexities that confront our society in its attempt to understand and choose how to best employ these developing technologies, the question of how best to go about this process of public deliberation comes to the fore. In my presentation, I will give some specific examples of the state of the art in biotechnology.  I will also indicate how this biotechnological advance is forcing us into an extensive reconsideration of our concepts of human nature, benefit, and health.  Finally, I will argue that the Christian moral tradition has both an opportunity and an obligation to make its particularly rigorous and comprehensive contribution to the public deliberation regarding the appropriate guidelines and goals for biotechnology.
