CCIH is a network of 160 diverse Christian organizations, 35 secular affiliates and 300+ individual members. We recognize that the health of women, families, and communities is affected by a couple’s ability to voluntarily determine the timing and number of pregnancies. CCIH has assessed our member’s views on family planning (FP), and found all were positive about helping women avoid unintended pregnancies and abortion through voluntary FP, not including abortion, with differences in which methods were consistent with the organization’s beliefs and values. All the commonly used methods of FP act primarily to prevent fertilization, though science does not provide absolute proof of mechanisms. We will review recent evidence on how contraceptives work and related bioethical issues. Decisions regarding FP methods are based on several factors related to optimal health outcomes as well as the beliefs and values of organizations and individuals. CCIH respects the different approaches by faith communities to enable couples to voluntarily achieve their desired number and timing of pregnancies, consistent with the communities’ religious teachings and values. We urge secular organizations to do the same. FP is also a primary means to reduce abortion, and the international evidence will be reviewed. In the view of one CCIH member, “From a public health perspective, and a Christian perspective, we should be willing to help over 40 million women avoid the social, emotional and spiritual trauma—and often life threatening risk—of having to undergo an induced abortion.”—W.
