Over the course of the last 5 years, there has been considerable debate in the nation, especially in the conservative, evangelical, Protestant Christian community over the appropriateness of the fairly new Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine. As a response to the ongoing national debate about the HPV vaccine, this paper proposes support for the HPV vaccine based on a Lutheran bioethical analysis. The paper will examine first the medical background to the HPV problem, then the bioethical principles at stake supporting the vaccine use, and finally the Lutheran theological principles that reinforce widespread HPV vaccinations.
