Prenatal diagnosis and testing used to be just about ultrasound images and amniocentesis for chromosome counts. The technology is advancing swiftly, though, with ever earlier prenatal tests and for vastly more indications, even reaching to whole genome sequencing of a developing child. We will review current and potential prenatal tests, the technology, and its accuracy. The ethical questions regarding use of prenatal testing remain the same: Why use these tests? What are we looking for? And, how will the information be used? We will review these questions and the range of potential answers, as well as the policy context for any limits on prenatal testing.
