The Uyghur people of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China live in a high-tech surveillance state. Based on leaked documents, testimonials, and satellite imagery Uyghurs have been placed in “vocational training schools” that have been described as internment camps where prisoners live in squalid conditions and are forced to work against their will. Those that are not interred are monitored using high-tech surveillance and facial recognition technology. Their phone conversations are monitored for keywords, often using artificial intelligence software, and they are tracked through their phone’s GPS. Uyghur men are required to provide blood samples for a DNA database. Uyghur women have reportedly undergone forced sterilization and abortions if they have too many children. Journalists who have tried to report in the region are surveilled using facial recognition and tracking apps on their phones.
