“If you want to understand America, you must first understand Prozac.” This observation by bioethicist Carl Elliott underscores a major shift in our cultural understanding of what it means to be human: the search for salvation of the soul has been replaced by the desire to satisfy the self. Religion, with its creeds and commands, has given way to a therapeutic mindset that would liberate individuals from any restraints that might interfere with their drive for health, happiness, and personal fulfillment.This talk will examine the nature and limits of this therapeutic worldview. It will also explore the question of how far insurance companies and the government will go in underwriting the drive to produce “designer humans.” And it will address the challenge Christians face in engaging the therapeutic mindset.
